More Tips for Powerful Networking

Remembering names

The problem that most people have with remembering names is that they never really got the name in the first place. In other words, they weren’t actually aware of the name at all. There was nothing to forget. Why do you remember your mother’s name and your best friend’s name? Because you use it and it is important to you. From now on when meeting someone when you hear their name do the following: " Name, is it?"

"What’s your last name, Name?

"First Name, Last Name."

"Thanks, Name." You will have repeated it at least four times to yourself. You have been actually aware of the name from the beginning. You are likely to remember it.

Name Tags

Use one!

Many people recommend you wear your name tag on the right side of your body so people will have an easier time reading it. There may be something to that. Just be sure you put it where people can see it. I’ve seen many a tag hidden under a coat lapel or tucked under a sweater. Useless! If you have a unique logo or a corporate image it might be worth getting a custom tag made. They cost less than you might think and last for years.

 Brochures

Don’t think you have to give a brochure to every person you meet. Invest a little time to find out who you are talking to. (Ignore this tip if you don’t mind being considered a pushy peddler.)

Dress

It is always easier to dress down after you arrive. I’ve spend many a sales call with my suit coat hung over the door because I arrived overdressed. But you can’t dress UP afterwards. If you are unsure of what is appropriate, dress UP. Extra Bonus Tip: Wear something with pockets. It makes life SO much easier.

Packs

If you arrive with someone else, SPLIT UP for the evening! There is a great temptation to stick around with the people you know. Turn it into an adventure! Blaze some trails! Meet new people!
