Published In February of 2000, my mother-in-law had major surgery on her
ankle due to a previous break that had never properly healed.
Unfortunately the surgery itself created a new problem in a wound
about the size of a half-dollar that would not heal. She was finally
referred to a plastic surgeon to see if he could help. The plastic
surgeon (who will remain nameless) looked at the wound for no more
than one minute, harumphed a little, and pronounced (loudly) "THAT
WOUND WILL NOT HEAL." He proceeded to tell us that she needed to
change the dressing four times a day, that maybe in six months he
would do a skin or tissue graft, that his nurse would put another
dressing on it today and that he'd see her again in two weeks. Exit
doctor. (Another example of why Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of
"Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" laughingly refers to doctors
receiving their "Medical Deity" when they become "M.D.'s")
We didn't much care for this approach, so we went to
Presbyterian Hospital's Wound Care Center in Dallas. Here she was
seen by Dr. Leon Brill (HIS name I will proclaim again and again!) who
studied the foot closely, took tissue s for lab tests,
prescribed two courses of antibiotics, and scheduled tests over the
next three days to rule out bone and other infections, to determine
the nature of any bacteria, and to be sure there was nothing wrong
from the surgery. He then cleaned and redressed the wound, and we
scheduled a meeting for the next week.
The next three days were exhausting: bone scans, blood tests, x-
rays, you name it. But when we left Dr. Brill the next week, we knew
there was no bone infection and what the future treatment plans were
and why.
The tests were inconvenient. We were all exhausted from the
driving and the waiting. But we were happy to do it because Dr. Brill
was treating her like a HUMAN rather than as a CASE.
Are you treating your customers as CASES or PROJECTS or are you
treating them as HUMANS? One of the greatest gifts you can give your
customers and clients is to take the time to really GET who they are
and help them from there. The little extra care that Doctor Brill
took with my mother-in-law paid off in very fast healing and, just as
important, a little old lady who felt that someone really cared enough
to treat her as more than just an entry in the appointment book.
By the way, Dr. Brill released my mother-in-law after just TWO
MONTHS of treatment (versus the 6 to 12 months the other doctor
predicted). The wound was TOTALLY HEALED.
Thank you Doctor Brill!
